Midsummer Eve Celebrations / Conference dinner

Thursday, June 23

The main social event of the conference will take place on Midsummer Eve. Midsummer is the second biggest holiday in Estonia after Christmas and marks the Summer Solstice.  Winters in Estonia are cold and days are short while during the summer the weather is warm and night has only a few hours of darkness. Locally they are known as white nights and for this reason Midsummer Solstice celebrations have a central place in Estonian folklore. The tradition of celebrating Midsummer with large bonfires is firmly rooted in beliefs that go back thousands of years and involve ancient pagan rituals.

The conference dinner will take place in a beach pub and restaurant Paat (The Boat) situated on the seashore and with an emphases on local traditional sea food. The restaurant is next to the Viimsi Open Air Museum hosting a local Midsummer celebration. If you prefer enjoying the company of your fellow conference participants the restaurant and the outside terrace is at your disposal with the food, drinks and a picturesque view to The Gulf of Tallinn. Or if you want to merge in and experience the flavor of traditional Estonian Midsummer Celebration, the public bonfire is just a few steps away.

The conference bus will take you to the dinner at 19.15 from The Academic Hostel and at 19.15 from The Nordic Hotel Forum. The bus will take you back to the Nordic Hotel Forum and the Academic Hostel at 10PM, 11PM, at midnight and 01AM on June 24th. If you want to stay longer, you can call taxi (the numbers are provided with the local information). Dress casual and have something warm to put on for the night.
